Mother

I used to leave her little notes in her lunches
If she comes down now its cigarettes on the desk
When she left she said she hated us all
Yet she still took her baby blanket
She calls with that sad tone in her voice
when I look at her I see it in her eyes
No longer the eyes of a child
No longer the eyes of a teenager
I see the witless eyes of a woman
Its here we have to know too much
She asks me for a dollar
Secretly asking for a friend
There is no friend in mother
Not when she turns again
I ask her to stay
Embarrassed she turns away,
He says I have to come home, she says
I wish there was something I could do
A dream came true when she came back
They both broke her heart and she left again
Of course I knew the whole story,
She had no one else to tell it to
One day she will learn on her own
as I stand in the doorway with tears in my eyes
The same tears when I first held her
When she made me a mother
